Hair Transplant: Suffering from Depression due to Hair Loss?

Baldness is one of the major problems faced by people in Kolkata. It can happen at any age irrespective of gender. Hair loss is the first step to baldness, however, baldness is hereditary. Youths facing this problem go through insecurities and later are traumatised. The only solution to this problem is HAIR TRANSPLANTATION. However, any medication or treatment can slow or stop the hair fall; but it cannot bring back the hair already lost. This surgery basically takes patient’s own hair from the back of the scalp and transplants to the area of less hair. The transplanted hair is natural and needs hair cut and shampooing from time to time as it grows naturally.\r\n\r\nOrentriech, the Norman New York dermatologist, re-discovered the technique of hair transplantation after the Japanese discovery which failed to spread the word. The technique was known as ‘punch grafting’. But the smaller punch grafting did not give desirable results, whereas the larger grafting gave the ‘doll like’ look to a generation of patients. But later on hair transplantation method has been adopted from the Japanese method itself, which was projected by 5 Japanese dermatologists. There are 2 broad categories of surgical restoration procedures.\r\n

  1. Follicular unit transplant
  2. \r\n

  3. Follicular unit extraction
  4. \r\n

\r\nFollicular unit transplant includes scalp flaps and surgical excision.\r\n

  • Scalp flaps-
  • \r\n

\r\nSmall pedicle flaps and even free strip grafts of donor scalp had been employed for decades for scar correction on the scalp and eyebrows and had been reformed after 1975 because of J. Juri’s work in Buenos Aries. The appearance of a punch grafted hairline was eliminated by his long scalp flaps, but they were still not always popular with patients. The rate of its success was lesser than that of its failure, the reason being the unnatural look of the frontal hair which lacked density and direction. In the current era of hair transplantation, the routine use of scalp flaps remains only to the hands of a select few individuals such as the Juri brothers in Argentina, Patrick Frechet in France and Mayer and Fleming in the USA because of its intricacies.\r\n

  • Surgical excision-
  • \r\n

\r\nWithin a gap of two years came the development of the alopecia reduction operation around 1977. Since it was easy enough to learn fast and had a high safety factor, it became popular in the coming two decades. But it was cosmetic and that was the major drawback. Then there were ‘stretch backs’ which was corrected by Frechet by his method of ‘triple flaps’. However, these developments in flaps and scalp have lagged behind the advances in graft techniques and the era of alopecia reduction seems to have passed. It depends upon the future surgeons whether they invent improved techniques to stimulate a new era of alopecia reduction.\r\n\r\nFollicular unit extraction is a method of extracting or in other words, harvesting of hair into follicular units. This basically plucks hair from the donor area and placing it in the balder region. This differs from strip harvesting, where in strip harvesting a strip of the scalp is taken out and then dissected into many follicular units. Nowadays FUE is changed or rather modified into Advanced FUE. Advanced FUE enables creation of larger donor pools by taking hair strands from chest, leg arms and so on.\r\n\r\nThe Hair transplant surgery has 3 simple steps. They are:\r\n

  • The  initial consultation,
  • \r\n

  • Medication
  • \r\n

  • Surgery.
  • \r\n

\r\nThere are two surgical procedures as mentioned above- the Follicular Unit Transplantation or Strip Harvesting and the other is Follicular Unit Extraction. The results can be seen in 2 or 3 months and the hair growth is permanent. Although people have a lot of scruples because they feel the transplanted hair might fall off in sometime, but Hair Transplant is very much popular world-wide and draws hefty revenue.\r\n\r\nA  normal human has around 100,000 scalp hairs approximately. In an average man, hair grows around 1-2 cm per month. The active growing stage of hair is 2-4 years and the resting phase of hair lasts for 100 days. Every day, approximately 100 hairs are shed every day and that is considered to be normal, greater than that is an alarm for future baldness. Temperature and climate also affects both hair growth and hair loss.\r\n\r\nThe patient who has approached for a surgery of hair transplant in Kolkata, is given local anaesthesia. After some time the scalp is treated with shampoo, followed by an antibacterial agent. The donor follicle harvesting is initiated. The two methods include strip harvesting and the other one is called follicular unit extraction. The strip of a skin is harvested in the portion of the scalp where the growth of hair is good. The doctors make proper sites so that the grafts can be inducted there. To give it a natural look the doctors have to plan it meticulously. The technicians later on insert the grafts in their respective places.\r\n\r\nHence hair transplant is a life changing possibility for people suffering from depression due to excessive hair loss. The cheaper it is India where as to in USA its ten times more. Hair transplantation in Kolkata is cheapest, however because of the availability of famous doctors at a low budget.
