Patients often approach me with scarred scalps, and ask whether it’s possible to regrow hair in these areas. – Dr. Maneesh Sonthali

The good news is, it IS!

\r\nScarred tissues are usually the result of an operation, a trauma or sometimes, burns. Grafting, usually, is very difficult in these areas than on normal tissues, the reason being poor blood circulation and stiffness. Post-operative scars are even more complicated than burnt scars because of the deeper impact.\r\n\r\nStill and all, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is one way of enabling concealing of the scar tissues is a simple, hour-long surgery. Hair transplant works through these tissues, where the loss is often permanent.\r\n\r\nConcealing Scar Tissues with Hair Transplant\r\n

The chances of success in hair transplant:

\r\nThe rate of success depends on the smoothness of the scar tissue. Your mane will grow as long as the skin in the area has not become thick, although thickenings can be flattened with cortisone shots.\r\n\r\nHowever, there are certain things you should keep in mind before expecting positive results:\r\n

    \r\n
  • The grafts may not be evenly positioned, as the blood supply in scar tissues is not adequate.
  • \r\n

  • A single session might not be enough, and additional hair plantation might be needed to achieve desired density.
  • \r\n

  • The grafts placed on scar tissues will less closely packed than those on a normal scalp. This is to prevent poor growth. A step otherwise, can be counter-productive.
  • \r\n

  • Only a successful grafting will lead to the formation of new blood vessels. Hence, you will need to take extra care of the grafts, as they do not stay on scar tissues as efficiently as they do not normal skin.
  • \r\n

  • In addition, if not done with precision, there might be problems of ‘abnormal hair direction’ and the follicles becoming dislodged.
  • \r\n

  • Success also depends on the physiology of the patient.
  • \r\n

  • Cost of the procedure will depend on the number of grafts. The wider the scar, the higher will be the expenses.
  • \r\n

Graft Survival rates:

\r\nHair restoration in India is a common concern, especially when it is about getting the graft on a scar tissue. With older technologies, this was indeed a challenging task. But, with technological advancements made, the results have become long-term and easy to achieve. Survival rates are as high as 95-98%.\r\n

How to get the desired density on scar tissues?

\r\nHair loss due to scar tissue leads to low vascularity. The common notion is, FUE can only help in developing a moderate density of your mane. However, with safe and accurate extraction patterns, and with the application of the right punch size, good, acceptable results are possible.\r\n

What are the white and pink dots post an FUE surgery?

\r\nThere’s nothing to get anxious about either. Pink dots are indicators of the healing process, while white dots suggest that the healing has been completed, and that the scar tissue has settled. This is still better than the linear scar on the back of the head left after an FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) surgery.\r\n\r\nIf you have thought about opting for hair transplant in Kolkata, it is wise to know that there may be little scars in the donor area. However, this is a trivial issue as it can be taken care of with a simple scar revision session.\r\n

Wrap-up:

\r\nBurns and accidents can lead to ugly, disfiguring injuries. Hair once lost as such, never comes back. This is a thing of physical as well as emotional stress. If you wish to have your tresses back, you must undergo this aesthetic surgery.\r\n\r\nAnd don’t fret, because it really, really works!\r\n\r\n
